Out of 2,000 Americans surveyed in 2018, as many as 500 said they were in some sort of pain constantly. The pain impacted their mood, general outlook on life, and overall health.
After changing their diet, posture, sleep patterns, comfort level, and exercise, 60% of those in pain felt better.
What does this tell us? Our bodies rely on us to take care of them and if we don't, we pay the price. As humans, we cannot perform in crucial areas of our life if we aren't in good health.
If you want to learn how to prioritize your life and become healthier, get yourself back on track below.
The Importance of Putting Your Health First
We all know that our health is important and that we need to take care of our bodies. Truthfully, there is a lot more to it than just that.
It's easy to say we want better health, but it's equally easy to come up with excuses about why we can't be healthy.
How many times have you told yourself you're too tired to exercise or eat better food? When was the last time you put yourself first and got a good night's sleep rather than doing chores or extra work?
You may think you're too busy to put yourself first, but prioritizing your health and self will help you in the long run. You can't serve from an empty cup, as they say, and working yourself without caring for yourself is not a productive way to live.
Change your thinking patterns and consider what is most important in your life. Health should be your first priority because, without health, you can't have much else.
If you focus on yourself first, you can start to improve other areas of your life and feel more at ease while doing so.
So, you may be wondering what putting your health first looks like.
An example could be putting exercise ahead of doing something else instead of saying you don't have time for exercise. Another example is to say no when you need to and take care of yourself before pleasing others.
What do you think you need to do in order to put your own livelihood first?
How to Prioritize Your Life and Health
Consider these 3 tips when you want to make changes to your life and put yourself first. It takes motivation, practice, and effort to improve your health, but you can do it if you plan ahead of time.
1. Practice Time Management
Managing your time with work, family, social, school, and anything else you may have going on can seem daunting.
This is a big reason why people don't even try to put their health first. It doesn't seem possible when you look at it from this perspective. This is a mindset.
Instead of putting all of those things before yourself, you should be at the top of the list. When you are healthier, you feel better. When you feel better, you will do better in any of the other areas of your life.
Manage your time based around your needs. Plan time for exercise, meal planning, cooking, meditation, and other healthful practices. When the time comes to do those things, don't let anything else get in the way of it.
It can be difficult to do this at first, but it becomes easier as you practice turning it into a habit. This is a huge step in creating a healthier lifestyle.
2. Learn to Say No
Another challenging task is learning to say no and choose the healthier choice. Some of the unhealthy things we do make us feel better, but only for a short amount of time.
For instance, going out with friends for an expensive night on the town may be fun at the time, but your body and bank account will not thank you for it the next day.
Say no to unhealthy snacks and choose a healthier option. Say no to staying up late to work on a project and get the sleep you need. Say no to getting a quick burger from the drive-thru and prepare a meal at home instead.
Of course, it is still healthy to indulge occasionally, but occasionally does not mean regularly. Finding that distinction for yourself is crucial.
Make yourself a priority over others in your life.
3. Don't Change Too Much at Once
Practice one or two changes at a time to ensure you are able to stick with this new lifestyle. Making significant changes can be easy to do at first, but keeping up with these changes is where you will notice an improvement in your life.
“the definition of insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result”
Learn how to maintain what works for you and if something is not working, learn to do it a different way.
A healthy life is possible for anyone, but that may not always look exactly the same for each person on how to prioritize life.
Making healthy choices helps to jumpstart your new perspective and motivate you to keep going. Taking the first step is how you start.
Are You Ready to Make a Change?
It is easy to say you want to be healthy, but taking the steps to make it happen is another story.
Now that you have more insight into how to prioritize your life and health, you may be ready to get started.
Taking the initial step may not seem like a challenge, but maintaining those changes and continuing to make healthy choices may be. Don't give up on yourself and keep trying to become better no matter what obstacles may seem to be in the way.
